Synopsis: "Definitely, maybe" is a romantic comedy. Story's mainly about Will Hayes (Ryan Reynolds), a 30-something Manhattan dad in the midst of a divorce when his 10 year old daughter, Maya (Abigail Breslin), starts to question him about his life before marriage. Maya wants to know absolutely everything about how her parents met and fell in love.
Will's story begins in 1992, as a young, starry-eyed aspiring politician who moves to New York from Wisconsin in order to work on the Clinton campaign. For Maya, Will relives his past as a idealistic young man learning the ins and outs of big city politics, and recounts the history of his romantic relationships with three very different women.
Will hopelessly attempts a "PG" version of his story for his daughter aka. censoring certain parts and words, and changes the names of the women in his past relationships so Maya has to guess who he finally married. Is her mother Will's college sweetheart, the dependable girl next-door Emily (Elizabeth Banks)? Is she his new-found, longtime best friend and confidante, the apolitical April (Isla Fisher)? Or is she the free-spirited but ambitious journalist Summer (Rachel Weisz)?
As Maya puts together the pieces of her dad's romantic puzzle, she begins to understand that love is not so simple or easy. And as Will tells her his tale, Maya helps him to understand that it's definitely never too late to go back...and maybe even possible to find a happy ending. ____________________________________________________________________ Simply put, "Definitely, maybe" is about the story of Will and his past three relationships with three different women, which he tells to his daughter Maya. Maya asked out of her curiousity of who is actually her mum due to an unexpected sex education that happened in school.
"Definitely, maybe" is one of the GOOD movies release this year. It's not the typical romantic comedy type of movies as it is more intriguing and more interesting than others. There's a certain zest in it. Few things that makes it stand out among the others is:
1. 3 B-E-A-UTIFUL actresses in the movie. All three of Will's ex were gorgeous women. Emily (Elizabeth Banks) the blonde, April (Isla Fisher) the redhead and Summer (Rachel Weisz) the brunette. That's how I remember them. Hahaha.. The three actresses were not just sexy or the sex-appealing actresses but more of the attractive and really pretty women, which made it one of the more genuine and realistic romantic comedies.
2. Maya (Abigail Breslin) Her character in the movie just tickles the funny bone and delivers a very deep message to whoever watched the movie. She plays the innocent, naive and clueless bystander who absorbs and tries to understands the story. Her funny and witty remarks makes people laugh at her innocence and also her sharp perception is one to be admired.
Maya: What's a threesome?
Will: It's a game, that adults play sometimes... When they're bored.
Maya: ...Whatever.
3. PG? More like "U". This movie is suitable for anyone and everyone, and I mean ANYODY and EVERYBODY too. Yeah sure, there's bound to be some sexual references in it but what movie nowadays don't? Heck, the movie even started with sex education in a primary school!
Anyways, when i say that it's suitable for everyone, I meant as in.. ermm.. "status" way. For singles, this movie's a heartwarmer as the romantic essence in it just makes people go "aww" in the end. Kinda like the perfect cure for a bad mood or a bad day, a sure movie that will cheer you up. For couples. this is the perfect movie for dates and especially Valentine's! Very good show because of the "lubby-dubby"-ness in it. Overall, the movie is just best suited for people in this category.
As for families, the relationship between Will and Maya (divorced father & daughter) is a very close and open one. A perfect example and role model for all families to learn from. Last but not least, for th married / elderly, this movie relives the past as it tells about three different situations where they will surely have known or even experienced before. Also, due to it's "predictable-ness", the movie's not such a tough cookie for them to understand.
All in all, I just have to say: Till this point of the year 2008, "Definitely, maybe" is the best romantic comedy so far that scores perfect overall marks and is surely one for the keepers. In short, I'm just telling whoever's reading this post to just GO & WATCH THE MOVIE!! =D
Trust me, you won't regret it. (Words from a movie critic? hmm..)
P.S. My favourite "ex" is April! =D Who's yours?
